After a successful career as an architect, Joan moved to the Reno/Tahoe area and lives in a house she and her husband designed in Verdi.
As an architect she pursued design rather than management. She drew every day for her work; her tools were light, color,
materiality and composition. Each project evolved from two-dimensional drawings into the Construction of actual physical
objects in three-dimensional space, eventually becoming buildings and places.
When she returned to painting, she reversed that process, starting with the seeing of physical objects, people, places and
spaces, and ending with the creation of drawings and paintings. In a way, this work to her is De-Constructing the architecture of what she is seeing. But in distilling the three-dimensional down into two, she still uses the same tools of light, color, materiality, and composition.
All this is to say that she loves painting as much as architecture (which is saying a lot).
