Latimer Club Plein Air
The Latimer Art Club has a legacy stretching back to 1921. It began as an intrepid group of artists led by Lorenzo Latimer, a well-known artist from the Bay Area. They would wander by car or horseback into the deserts surrounding Reno and the Sierras in the Lake Tahoe region. The artists painted in the summer at Fallen Leaf Lake. Two of the Reno-based painters went onto help establish the Nevada Museum of Art.
Today the tradition of plein air painting continues with the “Latimers.” This group of artists meets regularly 7 months of the year to head into the great outdoors to paint.
The current art show here at North Tahoe Arts celebrates the melding of the Latimer Club’s historic roots with modern day plein air painters. Paintings of the Truckee Meadows, Washoe Valley, Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake continue to be foundational to the history of Northern Nevada’s outdoor painting legacy.
